Phoebe’s Sweater – Book Review

I’d like to share with you a book I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing; Phoebe’s Sweater by Joanna Johnson, Illustrated by Eric Johnson.

I think it’s really nice to note the fact that this book is a collaboration of husband and wife. Phoebe is obviously a labor of love.¬† As you can see they sent along one of the matching Note Cards and a few Bookmarks from this and their other books as well as a Post card announcing her newest book – Green Gables Knits.

This is a cute little children’s book about a Mouse named Phoebe who’s Mother knits her a new sweater. Meanwhile Phoebe just likes to play!

The story is a simple, quick read, just long enough to hold a small child’s attention. The illustrations adorn every page and are fabulous!

But the unique part of the book are the included Knitting Patterns. There is a pattern for Phoebe the Mouse, her dress and the sweater. There are also instructions for a matching sweater for real live child sizes 2, 4 and 6. And it is Adorable! I wouldn’t mind one for myself actually!

I have knitted up the mouse, dress and sweater. There is no little girl in my life right now, so I did not undertake the full sized sweater.

I found some yarn in my stash (part of my New Years Resolution is to use up all that yarn piled up in my studio!). I’ve used Cascade 220 for the doll and dress and some Plymouth Encore Chunky¬† for the sweater. The Encore is a 75% Acrylic/25% Wool yarn. I would have preferred to use 100% wool as suggested in the pattern, but I really wanted to use up some stash yarn. I didn’t have any pink for the ears, but after a quick dye job on a bit of white, I was all set.

This was a fairly quick knit with clear directions. I think I may have chosen to do the decreases on the head a bit differently to hide the stitches, but in the end the doll is so cute it really doesn’t matter. I just love her little ears!

The simple lace edging on the dress is a nice touch!

This was a really fun review! Thank you Joanne for this darling addition to my household. I can’t wait to check out the other books!

Phoebe’s Sweater is available along with the other books and Note Cards in their Etsy Shop. Take a look and maybe you’ll be knitting a new sweater for your mouse too!
